The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is set to be linked with India by train for the Bhutan to Get First Railway Link, marking a historic milestone in regional connectivity. Indian Railways has completed a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the railway line from Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan, an official from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) confirmed.
The railway project is a crucial step towards strengthening India-Bhutan relations, boosting trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the two neighboring nations.
Project Overview: First-Ever Railway Link to Bhutan
The 69.04 km railway line will connect Kokrajhar station in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan at an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore. The final location survey has already been completed, and now the project awaits DPR approval before moving towards implementation.
The proposed railway line includes the construction of six new stations:
- Balajan
- Garubhasa
- Runikhata
- Shantipur
- Dadgiri
- Gelephu
To support efficient railway operations, the project will also feature:
- Two important bridges
- 29 major bridges
- 65 minor bridges
- One road over-bridge
- 39 road under-bridges
- Two viaducts measuring 11 meters each
Once completed, the railway link will enhance connectivity between India and Bhutan, allowing seamless movement of people and goods.
